The Facts - Did you Know?

• Overweight or obese - that's almost 2 out of 3 North American children. "In Canada it is estimated that over half of children and youth aged 5 - 17 are not active enough for optimal growth and development" Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute.

• The result - significant health issues are likely to emerge from physical inactivity including obesity, type 2 diabetes, depression, and heart disease.

• A shocking 60% of children have at least one major physiological yet modifiable risk factor (besides overweight) for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high insulin or high blood pressure by the age of 12.

• When children become obese they develop poor self-images, have fewer friends, do not achieve as well academically and are at risk for serious adult health problems.

• The chance that an overweight adolescent will become an overweight or obese adult is 70%.

A child with one overweight parent has a 40% chance of being overweight. If both parents are overweight, the risk doubles to 80%.

• The advancement of technology has meant our kids have become inactive, unmotivated and unhealthy.

• For many kids, fitness has been replaced with surfing the web, television and video games. Past generations never had such a vast array of entertainment that kept them sedentary.

Canada's Guide to Physical Activity recommends that children participate in 90 minutes of regular activity most days of the week.

• Obesity is becoming a global epidemic and a serious threat for both children and adults.

The way our children portray fitness and exercise is exactly how the parent's life revolves around fitness and exercise. Although not true...most adults imagine exercise to be hard work, lifting heavy weights at the gym, or pounding away for hours on a boring treadmill. It doesn't have to be that way for adults...and certainly not for your kids...

...for kids, exercise should mean playing, having fun and being physically active!
